Natsume Yuujinchou (Natsume's Book of Friends) is a Japanese anime and manga series created by Midorikawa Yuki. It follows the daily life and adventures of Natsume Takashi, an orphaned high school student who moves in with his distant relatives. Natsume has strong spiritual powers that he inherited from his grandmother, along with a book filled with the names of the youkai she met. After accidentally releasing the powerful youkai Madara and retaining him as a bodyguard, Natsume begins returning the names of the youkai in the book while slowly opening himself up to those around him, both human and youkai alike.

Natsume Yuujinchou is essentially a supernatural slice-of-life series that follows Natsume through his small adventures (and misadventures) with the humans and youkai he meets. As a child, Natsume was alienated and even abused because of his abilities, which the world around him perceived as him being a troublemaker. He was sent to many different relatives, never staying in one place too long and never finding the one place to call home. Loneliness and melancholy were his constant companions, while youkai targeted him for his power.

Eventually, he is taken in by the Fujiwaras, whose unconditional love for him helps him to slowly open himself up and lower the walls he has built up over the years. He begins building strong relationships with them and his classmates, and even finally meets others with abilities like his. His story is one of learning, growing, and accepting yourself and those around you. He is a wonderfully realistic and relatable character whose main obstacles are not the youkai at all, but his own insecurities. He is a complex, variable character whose evolution is believable and mesmerizing.
